Dragon Ball Z’s newest tie-in gives us one of the hardest fight conditions in the form of Goku versus Jiren. As a three part fight with access to an alternate ending, you might find yourself getting frustrated when you keep completing one condition or the other. Because this fight doesn’t really have a clearly set win path, you might not know that in order to finish the final fight for the super dragon balls, you’ll have to go through all of the dialogue during battle. Simply put, the first two stages of this fight should last five minutes for the original ending. This will trigger the final boss fight, allowing you to get the Super Dragon Balls!
Once you’ve completed the dialogue that includes a retort from Vegeta asking Goku to finish it, you’ll be able to finish the fight after an additional ten to fifteen seconds. It’s important to note that if you break Jiren’s first form down to zero HP, he will automatically recharge into his final form, skipping vital dialogue. For this mission, you have two ways of easily keeping track of your progress: by playing in easy mode, restricting alternate endings, or by timing your run on a phone or clock.
The final fight itself doesn’t matter how long it takes, but you must be in the fight that allows you to switch between Android 17, Goku, and Frieza. Otherwise, if you get an end cut scene where Jiren has died, congratulations, you got the alternate ending! Overall, both of these endings have some pretty good rewards, however can be incredibly frustrating without knowing what to do.

Original Ending Requirements
Goku’s Strength is meant to be a story driven mission that showcases the main cast’s trust and admiration for Goku. The entire dialogue you need to let continue until the end is a truly heartfelt commentary from the likes of Piccolo, Vegeta and Master Roshi. During this, the majority of the first round will be the subtle build up to Goku perfecting his Ultra Instinct form.
Once he’s transformed, which will happen shortly after Beerus tells everyone to be quiet and listen, you’ll be able to end the first stage of the fight, and enter the second stage. From there, wait until Vegeta and Jiren are done arguing, and then after ten seconds you can finish the fight!
- Make sure that you keep melee, and distance during the first phase of the fight.
- If you beat Jiren before the end of the dialogue in form one, it will be skipped.
- No matter what, the fight must exceed five minutes to be considered completed.
Once you’ve completed this stage, you’ll be ready for the final fight where you can switch between Android 17, Goku, and Frieza in an epic clash. This can be completed as quickly as possible, and happens after a special cutscene where all three attack Jiren together!
Goku’s Strength is the finale mission for Goku’s story path!
Original Ending Rewards
Simply put, the reward for beating the origin condition in Goku’s Strength is being able to get your first (or second) set of super dragon balls! On top of this, you’ll have completely beaten Goku’s storyline unless you have to go back and do the alternate endings. This is a sure fire way to get a full set of super dragon balls, which can be used for anything from characters, to titles, to even a boatload of zeni!
Alternate Ending Requirements
While you may need to wait five minutes to get the original ending, the alternative can be achieved with relative ease! All you need to do is take on the fight in a hyper aggressive manner, defeating Jiren twice before five minutes has passed. Doing this can be difficult, but using your sparking meter rush combinations, in combination with Goku’s ultra instinct version of the kame-hame-ha is devastating. It’s possible to melt Jiren in as little as two minutes and thirty seconds if you stay out of his rush chain combinations.
A fight to remember, as Goku and Jiren break out in their most powerful forms!
Some tips for making this fight go by quicker:
- Make sure to use your sparking meter for rush combos whenever you can
- Stay mobile, the obstacles and environment of the arena of power are highly durable
- Avoid Jiren’s long combo chains in melee rushes as much as possible
Jiren will focus primarily on crushing blast attacks, and combo chains that are meant to draw the battle out longer than it needs to be. To make this go by quicker, abuse U.I. Goku’s instant transmission, perception, and large melee hit combos. Finally, using Z-dashes, and wild senses allows for Goku to travel around the battlefield with blinding speed, making the fight go by a lot faster.
Alternate Ending Rewards
The major reward for completing the alternate ending for Goku’s Strength is that you’ll unlock Jiren’s story mode missions. This will give you another story mode to get through, with their own set of super dragon balls! Keep in mind that this is one of the hardest campaign stories, however is also the shortest. You’ll have to get through a who’s who of powerful opponents before finally claiming those sweet dragon balls for yourself! Otherwise you’ll get a load of zeni, and experience points for your trouble!
First form Jiren will be easily conquered once you acquire Ultra Instinct Goku, a good sign to continue the fight phases.
Keep in mind that the alternative ending does not count as having completed Goku’s storyline, as you must do the original condition. However, once you’ve beaten the main story, this will be required to 100 percent Goku’s campaign path.
Three Stages Of Fun
In order to beat Goku’s Strength, you’re going to be fighting Jiren three times in total. For the most part, the first two are the most important as they must exceed five minutes in total play through. After this, you’ll have an impressive final boss fight which can be done at the players leisure. This fight will mix a lot of what you already learned from your previous campaign battles, but also rest your patience.
You don’t want to rush the battle, but you don’t want to prolong it either. Truly being an example of needing to control yourself, and learn when to strike when the time is right. Otherwise, you’ll be like me, and hopelessly get the alternate win condition over and over. If you find yourself struggling too hard, don’t be afraid to shoot it over to a lower difficulty, and bypass the five minutes requirement entirely. Keep in mind though, by doing this, you can’t naturally get the alternate ending!
Ultra Instinct Goku Vs Full Power Jiren (Phase Two)- This is where you can get your alternate ending by beating Jiren early!
Base Form Jiren (Phase One)
At the beginning of Goku’s Strength, you’ll have to face off with Jiren at his base power level, where he will for the most part attempt to avoid you, and power up his Ki. He uses heavy special attacks, as well as rush combinations in order to try and drag the fight out longer than need be. He’s incredibly difficult to fight head on, however here’s a few tips for the situation:
- Unfortunately for Jiren, all of his special attacks have a hard time passing through obstacles.
- In his first form, he tries to stay away/ fight defensively against the player.
- Jiren tends to try and build up his Ki so he can launch as many ultimate attacks as possible.
- No matter his form, avoid his rush combinations, they are long and grueling.
You’ll be able to safely dispatch this form of Jiren when you fully enter Ultra Instinct mode, when Goku’s hair turns white. Otherwise, you may skip some vital dialogue as Jiren automatically powers into his second form!
Using your Sparking Meter to enter rush combos is super effective in this fight!
Full Power Jiren (Phase Two)
Once you’ve defeated Jiren in his first form, he will automatically power up into his final form. This is a transformation that gives him a lot more strength and speed, along with much more devastating attacks. For the majority of this leg of the fight, Jiren will go on the offensive, and attempt to catch Goku in a long string of rush combinations. What makes this worse is that Jiren can do this with a faster ki charge, as well as fresh set of health.
It is imperative during this fight that you avoid as many combination chains as possible, as Jiren will attempt to melt your health bar with them. His attacks are still vulnerable to obstacles, however he attempts to use these special attacks in closer vicinity to you. Overall, this stage will attempt to push you to complete it early, but here’s a few tips to avoid that:
- Keep your distance from Jiren when he’s got a full Ki bar, this way you can prepare for his special attacks.
- Use instant transmission to evade any rush combinations that come your way.
- Try to avoid aggressive gameplay until after Vegeta tells you to finish the fight.
- Always try to keep at least three bars of ki so you can launch a counter attack.
Once five minutes has passed, you should be able to safely defeat Jiren, where you’ll be greeted by a cutscene of Android 17, Frieza, and Goku all bouncing around. If you get any other cut scene, you beat the fight too early and completed the alternate victory condition.
Full Power Jiren Transformation, dazzling and mighty!
Jiren Team Battle (Phase Three)
The final stretch of this battle comes in the form of a team battle against Jiren in his final form. This battle sees Goku, Android 17, and Frieza attempting to defeat this monster with his maxed out health bar. For the most part, this is incredibly easy to do as you can switch out, and heal your fighters when one gets drained. This fight does have a few tricks to it though, as you won’t have any transformations, and Jiren will go all out on you!
Its recommended to consider the following approaches when dealing with this final stage of the battle:
- Make sure you switch characters out frequently so they can heal
- Android 17 is great for melee chain combinations, Frieza is good for blast attacks and taking damage, and Goku is good for speed and ranged blast attacks.
- Your sparking meter use will be key here, as you can keep juggling Jiren during it.
- Using switch clash attacks can smoothly keep your character changes, while also keeping up the damage!
Once you’ve fully depleted Jiren’s HP you’ll be able to get your super dragon balls, and will have completed Goku’s story mode!
